NTT and Mitsubishi announced that they had successfully conducted a demonstration of "wireless laser power transmission." In the future, it may also be possible to transmit electricity in space or deliver power directly to moving devices, such as unmanned drones.

A consortium of 12 Japanese companies said that it has invested in Commonwealth Fusion Systems, a U.S. fusion energy startup. The consortium aims to commercialize nuclear fusion power generation in Japan at an early date by acquiring technical knowledge through the investment. JAEA has developed the world's first rechargeable battery using the depleted uranium left over from producing fuel for nuclear reactors. The breakthrough could lead to use of the 16,000 tons of uranium byproduct stored in Japan and a more efficient rechargeable battery based on renewable energy. Tests showed the prototype to be stable, with no degradation after repeated charges and discharges.

박기영 에너지 전담 신임 차관은 재생에너지 변동성 완화를 위해 최적의 전원 구성을 확보, 분산 에너지자원의 확대와 시장제도 개편 등 탄소중립을 실현에 가겠다고 밝혔다. 한화솔루션은 RES프랑스의 개발·건설관리 부문과 약 5GW 규모의 태양광·풍력 발전소 개발 사업권을 약 9천843억원에 인수하기로 의결했다고 밝혔다. Hanwha Solutions said that it has acquired a 100% stake in renewable energy developer RES France at $855.2 million to expand its business portfolio in Europe. After completion, Hanwha Solutions will retrieve investments by selling off those projects. DB Financial Investment estimates 700 billion won to 800 billion won per gigawatt.

감사원이 수도권 미세먼지 악화의 주원인 중 하나로 ‘친환경’으로 포장된 LNG발전소의 오염물질 배출 관련 산자부와 환경부에 시정을 촉구했다. 한국가스공사가 카타르에서 2025년부터 20년간 연 200만t 규모의 액화천연가스를 신규 도입, 기존 도입 가격 대비 약 10억달러를 절감할 전망이다. South Korea’s energy ministry said that it had signed a 20-year liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply agreement with Qatar for the next 20 years starting in 2025. “This long-term contract is considered to have favourable contract conditions, which would help stabilize LNG supply as well as to significantly drop fees,” the ministry said.

Madrid-based Ocean Winds decided to make an initial investment worth $100 million to establish an offshore wind power plant in Incheon, west of Seoul. In addition, EDPR decided to invest $100 million in solar power farm in Goheung, South Jeolla Province. The company currently operates solar and wind energy plants in 14 countries in Europe and North America.

Doosan Heavy I&C has secured a turbine supply contract from KEPCO E&C for its Jeju Hallim offshore wind farm.

에너지경제연구원에 따르면 최근 2년 연속 뒷걸음쳤던 총에너지 수요가 올해 총에너지 수요는 전년 대비 4.2% 증가할 것으로 전망됐다. 에너지원별로 보면 천연가스와 전기 수요 증가율은 각각 4%와 3%로 제시됐고 석탄을 뺀 대부분 에너지원 수요가 늘 것으로 관측됐다. South Korea plans to invest about $65.4 billion in its signature green energy projects by 2025 as it seeks to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, the finance minister said. “We plan to invest 3.8 percent of our GDP by 2025 in Green New Deal projects, including green infrastructure, renewable energy and green mobility,” Hong said.
